burbankWhy are there still so many road closures? The California Department of Transportation will open the Hollywood Way-Alameda Avenue bridge on September 8. Caltrans moves ahead with construction of the new Hollywood Way onramp to the westbound 134 Freeway. Pass Avenue bridge will be closed starting September 9. Work is expected to be completed by spring 2010. Burbank residents should be prepared for more road closures and detours as the project continues.

This new ramp is needed to reduce congestion at the busy Hollywood Way/Alameda Avenue intersection and improve access to the 134 Freeway from the Media District. This three-year project is being constructed by Caltrans with support from the City of Burbank, and began on April 9, 2007. During the construction period, lane closures and detours may be effect for portions of Hollywood Way, Alameda Avenue, and Pass Avenue. Check out the City of Burbank Planning and Transportation Division website often for project updates and upcoming roadway closures.

Caltrans spokesman Patrick Chandler tells Burbank Leader, “We want to make sure people in Burbank, and also Toluca Lake and North Hollywood, have the information they need.”

“There’s some movements along the way that may cause some issues,” said Ken Johnson, the city’s traffic engineer. “We happen to know that when some new closures happen, there’s probably two weeks of confusion. Then they get into a habit after a week or two.”

Burbank Leader also reports, “The $47-million project also includes the construction of retaining and soundwalls along the Hollywood Way ramps. The overcrossings for Alameda and Pass Avenues and Hollywood Way will also be lengthened to accommodate the new on-ramp.”

The Planning and Transportation Division is committed to providing the people who live, work, or recreate in the City of Burbank a transportation system that is safe, efficient, dynamic, and accessible while remaining aesthetically and environmentally compatible with the community. This division is responsible for long term planning that ensures that important transportation services and facilities will always be available to the people of Burbank, and identifies funding sources that provide high quality transportation services in the most cost-effective manner possible.
