handWhat’s On Your Plate? is a documentary produced and directed by award-winning filmmaker Catherine Gund about kids and food politics. It was filmed over the course of a year, following Sadie and Safiyah, two eleven-year-old multi-racial city kids, as they explore food systems in New York City and surrounding areas. These two girls talk to each other, food activists, farmers, storekeepers, and their families about food in a quest to understand what’s on all of our plates. A free screening of the film is taking place April 1st at the Hammer Museum (10899 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles). A Q&A with director Catherine Gund, and Sadie Hope-Gund, eco-chef and activist Bryant Terry, Jayni Chase, founder of the Center for Environmental Education, and actors/activists Esai Morales and Ed Begley, Jr. will follow the screening. (2009, 73 Min. Dir: Catherine Gund)

ALL HAMMER PUBLIC PROGRAMS ARE FREE. Tickets are required, and are available at the Billy Wilder Theater Box Office one hour prior to start time. Limit one ticket per person on a first come, first served basis. Hammer members receive priority seating, subject to availability. Reservations not accepted, RSVPs not required. Parking is available under the museum for $3 after 6:00p.m.

From Director Catherine Gund:

“I’m making What’s On Your Plate? with Sadie because the time is now for parents and children to learn the real deal about the weakest links in our food chain. Most of our food is so processed that we can’t pronounce the long list of ingredients. On average, our food is trucked over 1,500 miles before we bite into it. And seeds are engineered to die out after one season in order to ensure corporate control of the food chain. In this environment, how can any of us feel a harmonious, life-affirming connection to what we eat?

“Kids need to know the full benefits of local food: more energy-efficient production, more prosperous farmers, healthier communities, longer lasting and better tasting fruits and veggies. Kids need to know that their food doesn’t only come from the supermarket or the factory, but from nearby farms, trees and the ground. Adults need to be empowered to share this information with the next generation.”
