Recycle Your Christmas Tree

Apparently, we throw away 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving Day to New Year’s Day than during any other time of year. I’m not sure where this statistic originated from, but I’ve heard it many times already this holiday season. It makes sense though. More shopping + lots of wrapping party + more parties = more trash. Let’s feel better about ourselves by recycling our Christmas trees, and make 2010 a green year! Starting December 26, 2009 through January 16, 2010, Burbank residents can recycle Christmas trees by placing them at curbside on regular collection day or taking them to a collection site.
Burbank Collection Sites
Brace Canyon Park
2850 Haven Way, Burbank (in the parking lot off Haven Way)
Verdugo Park
3201 W. Verdugo Ave, Burbank (near the corner of California St. and Verdugo Ave.)
NOTE: No flocked trees. Trees can be cut up and placed in the green waste bin with your other yard trimmings. This is specifically for Burbank. It varies from city to city.
Other rules: residents must remove all ornaments including tinsel, decorations, and metal and plastic tree stands from their trees before placing them at curbside or turning them in at a collection site. Trees over six feet tall should be cut in half for easier collection.
Residents who miss the curbside recycling dates can cut their trees into smaller pieces and place them in their green waste container. The trees collected by residential waste haulers will be recycled into compost, mulch, or ground cover. This helps preserve natural resources and reduce waste too.
So before you just toss your tree out to the curb for trash pickup, take some time to follow the guidelines above so you can recycle your tree. Here’s to a happy and green New Year!
