Californians breathe some of the unhealthiest air in the country. Air pollution can cause or worsen lung disease, even for people with healthy lungs. Nearly 20,000 Californians die prematurely each year because of air pollution. Join Ed in raising money and awareness for the Healthy Air movement so we can all breathe easier some day.

The Greater Los Angeles Healthy Air Walk is a 3-mile walk and will take place on October 3 at the Community Services Building in Burbank (150 N. Third Street). Registration can be completed online or on-site beginning at 8 am. The walk begins at 9 am, with a festival throughout, ending with a closing ceremony at noon. There are no fees for the Healthy Air Walk, but participants are asked to raise at least $100. Fundraising tips and tools are available at www.healthyairwalk.org.

10 Ways to Support Healthy Air

1. Support the American Lung Association by participating in the Healthy Air Walk

2. Join the American Lung Association Action Network to influence your elected officials to enact policies that support healthy air

3. Use less energy by insulating your home, choosing energy efficient appliances, switching to compact flourescent bulbs, and using a power strip for electronic devices

4. Avoid wood burning, especially on bad air nights

5. Switch to cleaner-fueled vehicles, like natural gas and hybrid electric-gasoline

6. Maintain your vehicle properly and keep your tires inflated

7. Don’t top off the tank when refueling and fill up the gas tank after dark when the sun won’t turn the gasoline vapors into ozone, a contributor to global warming and lung health problems

8. Take public transportation, carpool, ride a bicycle or walk

9. Use hand-powered or electric lawn care equipment rather than gas-powered versions

10. Wash your clothes with cold water

The American Lung Association is the leading organization working to save lives, improve lung health and prevent lung disease. With your generous support, the American Lung Association is “Fighting for Air” through research, education and advocacy. For more information about the American Lung Association, a Charity Navigator Four Star Charity and holder of the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Guide Seal, or to support the work it does, call 1-800-LUNG-USA (1-800-586-4872) or visit www.lungusa.org.
