Remember in high school science class when you had to get into a group, design a bridge, and then build it with toothpicks and glue? Well, this is so much cooler. Burbank students can enter the 7th Annual Student Design Competition for a chance to win some cash prizes. This year’s theme is to design a desert retreat for an artist or author. This particular theme will introduce students to the concepts of energy efficiency and water conservation in the built environment.
The top projects can win the Burbank Water & Power Recycle Center Environmental Scholarship, which is a cash prize:
First place $3,000 per team
Second place $2,000 per team
Third place $1,000 per team

About Burbank’s Building Division
Mission Statement: Serving the public with a professional staff that assures a safe and quality-built environment. Providing an innovative approach in the adoption of building standards, distribution of information, review and inspection of building construction, and monitoring of existing properties.
The City of Burbank Building Division sponsors the Student Design Competition each year with Burbank Water and Power and the Burbank Recycle Center to provide an opportunity for local high school students to explore the areas of building design, site planning, transportation, community services and redevelopment. The departments involved in sponsoring this competition are composed of professionals who have many years of experience in these areas. The contest is a unique chance for students to interact with Burbank city staff and gain exposure to building design, construction, and basic city operations.
What’s great about this competition is that it’s not limited to only those interested in planning and architecture. Students with interests in art, photography, environmental issues, graphic design, urban planning, local government, and computer design are also encouraged to participate. A wide range of media can be used to creatively participate in the program. Hurry and pick up your registration packets if you haven’t already!
