Bob’s Big Boy Restaurant in Burbank is celebrating its 60th birthday on September 24 by inaugurating a 26-kilowatt solar power panel. The celebration is called “Sixty and Solar” and will unveil the Canadian Solar panel installed by HelioPower on a carport roof. The panel is already generating electricity for the restaurant. The 39-megawatt hours of electricity produced by the solar panel system is enough to meet the electrical demands of seven homes, according to a press release of Bob’s Big Boy. The same capacity offsets the carbon emission of 57,000 miles of driving and the equivalent of 78 trees planted.
The Bob’s Big Boy restaurant on Riverside Drive was built in 1949 by Scott MacDonald and Ward Albert and is the oldest remaining Bob’s in America. It remains an example of the emerging coffee shop style that burst onto the scene in L.A. in the 1950s. Many resources have been spent to restore the quality of food, service and hospitality to keep Bob’s in its original form. The restaurant may be a historical landmark, but it’s able to keep up with the times as we can see from the ”Sixy and Solar” campaign. Bob is going green!
The website for the “Sixty and Solar” campaign gives details on Bob’s new solar addition and describes the importance of solar energy. “As solar power systems become more prevalent, the day is coming when no one will think of constructing a building without the ability to self generate electricity…A solar power system is a high return investment. Local, state and federal incentives add up to a savings on the initial cost of a photovoltaic system of up to 49% depending on the utility territory…Finally, a word for the planet. Solar power is energy from the sun. This unrelenting, continuous flow of energy onto the photovoltaic panels generates green, clean electricity.”
